When David Grisman performed here in 2013, he packed the house—no surprise, since he’s one of the best mandolin players in the world. His long career as a session musician has given him ample opportunities to stretch the boundaries of the mandolin. Grisman’s musical idiom combines elements of American jazz and bluegrass with international flavors. His colleagues call it “Dawg” music, from the nickname David received from the late Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead. Grisman’s discography is filled with collaborations with notables such as Garcia, Stephane Grappelli, Bonnie Raitt, Linda Ronstadt, Earl Scruggs, James Taylor, John Hartford, and Doc Watson. In addition, through founding the Acoustic Disc label and AcousticOasis.com, Grisman has helped make independent artist-producers a viable force in today’s music business.
